Creating dramatic tension through the timing of simple actions
Action that builds towards a climax has a way of capturing our imagination and drawing us in to whatever is happening on stage. The subtle play of building tension towards an ecstatic release is the skill that we, as creators of live performance, can use to develop the themes in our work to their greatest potential.
We create suspense when we gradually build an expectation that something is going to happen: the bomb counting down to 0, the agonizing wait for a first kiss, climbing the ladder up to the high wire…etc. We create a strong desire in the audience to find out what will happen next. It is then deeply satisfying when the action builds in a crescendo that reaches a peak far beyond what they imagined was possible.
By increasing our awareness of the rhythm and timing of our actions we can grow our creative impulses into performances that move both us and our audience.
